Abraham Janssens was born in Antwerp as the son of Jan Janssens and Roelofken van Huysen or Nuyssen. Abraham Janssens was a Flemish painter who was the leading exponent of the classical Baroque style in Flanders during the early 17th century. His stylistic development indicates that he was in Rome between 15and probably revisited the city sometime between 1602 and 1610.
The present painting dates to circa 1618 by which time Janssens had moved away from Caravaggesque tenebrism of his earlier work towards classicism.
